ANAR Foundation manages the EU harmonised number for cases of missing migrant children and teenagers.
The ANAR Phone for Missing Children 116 000, the single EU-harmonised number, received 2,892 requests for help about disappearances in 2021, leading to 1,172 cases handled. The reasons fall into six categories: runaway or thoughts of running away; being thrown out of home; parental abduction; loss, accident or other type of disappearance; abduction by a third party; unaccompanied migrant child or teenager.
Running away remains the main cause of disappearance, accounting for 66.5% of the 1,172 cases handled (779 cases). In most of them, the protagonists are fleeing severe situations of violence: physical or psychological abuse, sexual abuse, gender violence or bullying. Runaway cases have increased by 52.7% compared to 2020.
