Sign to end eating disorders
Adolescence often brings an almost constant worry about being accepted by others and a heightened sensitivity to outside messages — for example, the importance given to physical appearance. Combined with low self-esteem, an inability to solve problems properly and certain personality traits (self-demand, need for control, perfectionism…), this can trigger eating disorders such as ANOREXIA and BULIMIA.
Both disorders are illnesses that require medical and psychological intervention. If your child expresses a desire to lose weight, it is important to listen. Maybe they are right and could lose a few kilos — but always under medical supervision.
To prevent this kind of disorder, it is important to bear in mind that:
- Your child needs to feel loved and accepted as they are. Avoid comparisons with other children or teenagers; far from motivating them, it lowers their self-esteem and makes them more vulnerable.
- Set an example by eating healthily and exercising regularly. Teach them that mealtimes are a pleasant family moment for sharing experiences, and find time to exercise with them.
- Do not use food as a reward or punishment for behaviour you want to change.
